How to read the snapshot

Average rating

The mean star rating across the sampled listings that have one. A market sitting at 4.8 or above is crowded with well-reviewed businesses. A lower average means there is room for someone who does the job well.

Typical review count

The middle value, not the average, so one business with 5,000 reviews cannot skew it. It tells you how many reviews a business needs before it looks established in that city.

No website

The share of sampled listings with no website on their Google Maps profile. For anyone selling websites, SEO or ads, this is the size of the opening.

Phone listed

The share of listings that show a phone number. It is usually above 90%, which is why Google Maps works so well as a source for call lists.

Where the numbers come from

Each snapshot is built from one Google Maps search for that business type in that city, usually the first 40 or so results. It is a sample of the market, not a count of every business in it, and the date under each result tells you when it was collected.

The list of business types and cities grows every night. If the one you need is not there yet, a free Maps Harvest account can scrape it directly: any business type, in any city across six countries.
